Physical Therapy in Spartanburg, SC
Our Spartanburg clinic is on East Main Street, serving Spartanburg, Boiling Springs, and Duncan.
It is led by Dr. Drew McAbee, a Spartanburg native who has been with ProMotion since 2020 and now serves as Partner and Clinical Director. He is joined by Dr. Rob Wager, a board-certified orthopedic specialist who completed an orthopedic residency, and Isabella Grace, PTA, a former collegiate soccer and cross country athlete.
Whether you are recovering from surgery, working through a sports injury, or dealing with pain that has not gone away on its own, you will work one-on-one with a licensed clinician at every visit.
Featured Specialties
At ProMotion Rehab & Sports Medicine, we provide comprehensive outpatient physical therapy for a wide range of conditions, including:
What we treat
Most of what we do in Spartanburg is general outpatient orthopedics — the everyday injuries and conditions that make normal life harder than it should be.
- Back and neck pain, including sciatica and disc-related symptoms
- Knee and hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacement recovery
- Shoulder injuries, rotator cuff problems, and frozen shoulder
- Foot and ankle injuries, plantar fasciitis, and ankle sprains
- Post-surgical rehabilitation, working from your surgeon’s protocol
- Work injuries and South Carolina workers’ compensation cases
- Sports injuries at every level, from youth through adult recreational
- Balance problems and fall prevention
If you are not sure whether physical therapy is right for what you are dealing with, an evaluation will tell us. We would rather say so honestly than start a plan of care that is not going to help.
Board-certified orthopedic care
Dr. Rob Wager is an Orthopedic Certified Specialist (OCS) and completed a formal orthopedic residency at Cayuga Medical Center. Board certification in orthopedics requires additional clinical hours, examination, and demonstrated expertise beyond a physical therapy doctorate.
He is also certified through the Institute of Clinical Excellence in the Clinical Management of the Fitness Athlete — training focused on people who lift, train hard, and want to keep doing it rather than being told to stop.
Dry needling
Dry needling is available at our Spartanburg clinic. Dr. Rob Wager and Dr. Drew McAbee are both certified in the technique, which uses a thin filament needle to release tight bands of muscle and reduce pain.
It is not acupuncture. Dry needling targets specific muscular trigger points identified during your examination, and it is used alongside hands-on treatment and exercise rather than on its own.
Runners, cyclists, and endurance athletes
This is Dr. Drew McAbee’s primary clinical focus. He has advanced training in running and cycling movement analysis, and looks at how endurance athletes load their bodies over thousands of repetitions rather than treating the sore spot in isolation.
He is also an avid runner and cyclist himself, competing in races across the Southeast, and is currently completing an orthopedic residency toward board certification as an Orthopedic Certified Specialist.
Endurance injuries are rarely about the tissue that hurts. What matters is how you load it, how often, and what changed before the pain started — mileage, cadence, surface, footwear, or a gap in strength.
Golf
Dr. McAbee also treats golfers, working on the rotational demands of the swing and the movement limitations behind swing-related pain. For TPI-certified golf screening, see our golf physical therapy page — that service is based at our Columbia and Camden clinics.
Working with young athletes
Isabella Grace, PTA competed in collegiate soccer and cross country at Spartanburg Methodist College. She tore her ACL in high school and went through the full rehabilitation process herself before becoming a clinician.
That matters when you are working with a teenager who has just been told their season is over. She has been on both sides of it.
What to expect at your first visit
Plan for about 60 minutes. We will talk through your history, watch how you move, and test strength, range of motion, and joint mechanics. You will leave with an explanation of what is driving your symptoms, a plan for addressing it, and treatment started the same day — not just a printout of exercises.
Wear clothes you can move in. If your knee hurts, bring shorts. If it is your shoulder, a tank top helps.
Bring your insurance card, photo ID, and any imaging or surgical reports. If you have a referral or prescription, bring that too.
Insurance and cost
We accept Medicare Part B, South Carolina Medicaid, most commercial plans, and South Carolina workers’ compensation.
If you are on Medicare, we will explain your coverage and any expected out-of-pocket before treatment starts, not after.
Common questions
Do you treat everyday injuries, or only athletes?
Most of our patients come to us with back pain, knee pain, shoulder problems, or post-surgical recovery. The sports and endurance work is in addition to general orthopedic care, not instead of it.
Do you offer dry needling?
Yes. Dr. Rob Wager and Dr. Drew McAbee are both certified in dry needling, available at our Spartanburg clinic as part of a broader treatment plan.
What does Orthopedic Certified Specialist mean?
OCS is a board certification requiring additional clinical hours, examination, and demonstrated expertise in orthopedics beyond a physical therapy doctorate. Dr. Wager also completed a formal orthopedic residency.
Do you work with runners and cyclists?
Yes. Dr. Drew McAbee has advanced training in running and cycling movement analysis for endurance athletes.
Do you work with golfers?
Yes. Dr. McAbee works with golfers at our Spartanburg clinic on swing-related pain and the movement limitations behind it.
Do you take Medicare?
Yes. We accept Medicare Part B and will verify your benefits before your first visit.
Do you treat workers’ compensation injuries?
Yes. We work with South Carolina workers’ comp cases and coordinate directly with your employer and case manager.
Can I see a physical therapist for an injury that happened years ago?
Yes. Persistent pain often responds well to treatment even when it has been present a long time. An evaluation will tell us whether physical therapy is the right approach.
How long is a first appointment?
About 60 minutes. That covers a full evaluation, a discussion of your goals, and starting treatment the same day — you will not leave with only a printout of exercises.
Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist?
In most cases, no. South Carolina allows you to start physical therapy without a physician referral, and most plans cover it that way. Some plans do require one, and Medicare requires a physician to sign off on your plan of care. We verify your specific benefits before your first visit and tell you exactly what yours needs.
